What's In a Name?
Hello + welcome to the first Journal entry!
Since this likely our first time meeting, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Mya, and I am the Founder/Owner of Stone + Stump. I come from a branding and marketing background, so you can bet lots of thinking-time went into the logo and the name. :)
It was important to me to express my roots, incorporate my heritage, and for the logo to remind me of the core reason why the business was started: to create and support a community of people who are striving to live a happier, healthier, and more mindful lifestyle.
Now I am thrilled (also feeling vulnerable) to open my heart + mind to let you in to see how I came up with the name and logo you see today.
Stones are small and mighty. The Stone symbolizes to be strong, but still agile to change. Stones are hard and small; they get stepped on, thrown about, or forced to move due to natural elements. It's tough and resilient.
The Stone is a reminder to be tough and solid in my beliefs, to stay strong during the times of trouble and turbulence. Be resilient in my beliefs, but as a stone, be able to move and adapt to the environment. As a business grows, opportunities and challenges will come, the business and I will also need to roll with the ebb and flow of change.
A stump, unlike a stone, is rooted, firm, and unwavering. The Stump is a reminder of my roots and what keeps the business grounded. You'll see that The Stump has seven rings; this was an intentional design. It serves as a compass to guide my business-decisions (and life) by following the Seven Sacred Teachings of the First Nations people. Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility, and Truth.
The Stump reminds me to be mindful. A stump reminds me of a past life, of what once was. It symbolizes that when someone makes a choice, they say no to something else in return. In the instance of a stump, you're removing nature, but what are you gaining in return? Was the tree made to create something new? Was it removed because you wanted a more ecstatically pleasing view? Moved because someone else decided it was not meant to be there any longer?
A left-behind stump is a lesson: in order to have what you do now, something was sacrificed or given up in its place.
So there it is, the reason for the name Stone + Stump and the significance of the logo. The Stone is small, but tough, and can roll with changes best for the business and the community. The Stump is a reminder to be rooted, firm, and unwavering in our purpose.
Thank you for learning more about my company, and I hope you join the Stone + Stump community, be it as a maker, supplier, or customer. Together we can make a positive difference to our planet by adjusting our buying habits.
